Adults range in length from 12–16 m and weigh around 25–30 metric tons. The humpback has a distinctive body shape, with long pectoral fins and a knobbly head. They are found near coastlines, feeding on tiny shrimp-like krill, plankton and small fish.

Humpbacks migrate annually from summer feeding grounds near the poles to warmer winter breeding waters closer to the Equator.
